« on: October 18, 2013, 03:00:27 pm »
After several weeks and a few extra days to make sure everything is perfect, it’s time we welcome you back home.

We on Staff would like to thank you, copiously, for all of your patience and support while we worked on the new Archive and Forum. It is because of all of you that we did this, that we put in the man hours and why we are so very proud to unveil this to you today. What you are going to see is hours of work put in by Staff members, from the hosting aspect, the aesthetic work with the skins, to the meetings (sometimes not even a full 24 hours apart) that we all devoted to making sure that our unveiling to you is a complete success.

However, we are not a completed work. The ink may be dry on the pages we’re going to open to you, but there are still epics to be written. Our story is not finished, and so we ask that if you encounter pages that are crossed out or unfinished, that you bear with us. Some things were not feasible to complete even within the timeline, but we on Staff all have the same mindset that we are all working together to provide you with the best Archive, the best Community, that we possibly can and we assure it will be completed as soon as is possible.

That does not mean, however, that there aren’t plenty of things that are done and ready for you to explore.

I’m sure that you’re anxious, and you want the site links and you want to dive in headfirst. We are unbelievably happy with all of the excitement but there are things that we need to go over before that happens, and some of these issues can result in disciplinary action if the words are not heeded, so I must ask that before you scroll through and pluck out the links, you focus first on what I’m saying to you. Ignorance of rules and policies does not mean you’ll be excused if you break one unknowingly. These are important, but I promise there are rewards for you if you’re all good boys and girls.

The most important thing we have to discuss is the procedures that will take effect during our re-launch period. What dates are included in the re-launch period? The 18th through the 28th! During this next week or so, the usual Rules and Guidelines (while still in effect) take secondary position to a temporary set that will keep us all moving forward slow and steady to minimize the possibility of downtime because of so much traffic. This week-long period is a testing phase to ensure everything is operational when we’re at max capacity (we’ve done extensive testing just with the Staff members and everything checks out, but that’s much different than having hundreds of people on the site at any given time) as well as easing the site into a normal sort of ebb and flow. You’ll need to pay close attention to news postings during this week, to stay current with policies and announcements, or you’ll wind up lost in the shuffle and we don’t want that!

The first of the procedures we need to talk about is the Validating and Submission procedure for re-launch week. With so many authors, it would be inconceivable to imagine all of us uploading our stories at once, and so we on Staff are issuing what we’re calling a Blanket Weekend.

Absolutely no stories are to be uploaded from the 18th through the 20th.

I cannot stress that to you enough. There is to absolutely be no uploading of any stories from today through Sunday. Disciplinary action against your account will be taken if you break this rule. We know and understand that all of you are anxious to get writing and reading, but we just aren’t there yet. We have implemented a system that will be explained shortly, that will span re-launch week and will help keep the Submissions queue from over-flowing. The focus of this weekend is not to be on the uploading and sharing of your work, but rather getting to know the new Archive and Forum. Some features you’ll get to experience once there are stories posted, but there are plenty new modules and features to keep your little hands busy over the weekend.

One of the things we on Staff are encouraging you to do is register on our Forum, to join our FB group, and our social media sites, and get to know the Community all over again. So many of us have been present during this transition, yet others will be finding us as time progresses; trust us, you’ll want to be on the ground floor for this growing Community. It’s a good opportunity to pretty up your bio, to come up with new designs for your Forum avatar and signature, and participate in the excitement of the re-launch.

Hand in hand with registering on the Forum comes the request boards, and we on Staff are asking you to make use of them over the weekend, to request the categories and characters for your stories to find homes in. You’ll see this for yourself, but while the main categories have been added, it’s up to you to make sure the sub-categories are created. This means that if you have a story to upload, you will want to check and see if there is a category, a sub-category, and characters for it. If not? You’ll need to head to the Forum and request them be added. We cannot simply add categories and characters without provocation or cause, because it sucks up bandwidth if they’re only going to sit empty, so we are passing the responsibility on to you. Personal responsibility for your own writing is taking effect here, so don’t sit and wait for someone else to request it for you! Once Submissions open, you’ll want to get your work validated and posted and the only way that will happen is if there’s a category for it to call home. Once you learn to navigate the Forum, locating the boards is exceptionally simple. If you run into any problems or you have any questions or concerns, PM a Staff member and we’ll be happy to answer that for you.

Along with requesting categories this weekend, we want you to make sure that you familiarize yourself with our Rules and the Terms of Service that you will agree to uphold upon registering. Do not assume that the rules are the same from the old site, and I’ve stated before but ignorance of rules and policies is not an excuse not to follow them. We are implementing new disciplinary policies and you don’t want to find yourself on the wrong end of those, so it will be your responsibility to keep up with rules and policies.

Submissions will open on Monday, October 21st at 8 a.m. EST.

There will come an announcement on Sunday in regard to the Submissions, but for now please understand that severe disciplinary action will be taken if you try to upload anything this weekend.

You have been warned.

A lot of you expressed concern about the validating procedure if you were a previously validated author on the old Archive. Don’t worry, we have an answer for you as well, and that will be covered in the announcement on Sunday.

To those of you who made suggestions or requests, we went through every single one and did the best we could to implement them all. We are arranging a document full of all of your questions and our responses, which will be posted tomorrow. Stay tuned if you’re interested to see what happened with your suggestion!

Our Social Media sites, Tumblr and Twitter, will be undergoing URL and name changes at some point today, so please be aware of that and if you have them bookmarked you’ll need to change those URLs. Don’t worry, we’ll post those when we’re finished switching them over!

Our original Livejournal, the temporary Index FoS Forum, and the FoS FB group will all eventually be purged. We have not decided on a timeframe for that, probably somewhere within a month or two; they’ll be deleted eventually because we have created or are in the process of creating replacements and they will become obsolete. This announcement will be posted on all sites to be left there so people can find us should they need to, but this is your warning now. If there is anything you’d like to retrieve from these places, we suggest you do so as soon as is possible.

Are you chomping at the bit yet? Is the excitement stirring up those nervous tummy flips and butterflies? Are you ready to see your new home?

We are now opening the doors to you, with our gracious welcomes and in the hopes that your wait time was worth it. If you have any questions about anything, please feel free to comment or message a member of Staff in any location and we’ll do our best to get back with you as quickly as we can.

Please remember that this is still a testing phase, and so if you encounter any errors do not panic or assume they cannot be fixed or dealt with. Simply let a Staff member know, and we can get it resolved. Please, as always, be respectful and gracious, we have worked exceptionally hard on our re-launch.

Our thanks again for being a part of our Community.

Welcome home.

We had a Staff meeting tonight, and here are the highlights! Or those we can share with you right now. *seeeeeecretssssss*

We are full speed ahead for the relaunch on Friday, October 18th. Keep those countdowns tickin'! Tomorrow we will reveal the actual launch time, so stay tuned!

We are now officially hosted, both the new Archive and the Forum, and we are working on implementing skins as well as functionality and restoring some key features to the Archive.

We will not be releasing the domains until the actual relaunch, so you'll just have to bide your time until then!

A huge shout-out goes to Felina, who has been working exceptionally hard the last few hours to bring our site up onto it's foundations! Thanks for all you do, Cherub! ♥

Please know that tomorrow's newsletter will hold more vital information as we close in on the last day before the relaunch; stay tuned and get ready to come back home!

{Pokes her head in with a grin.} Hello gorgeous~ Welcome welcome!
Where do you want the gift basket? {Holds it up.} It's got candy, fuzzy slippers, and a vibrator molded in the shape of Cumberbatch's presumably wonderful second appendage.

Newsletters / [10/11/13] Reimagining Our Image : YOU Decide!
« on: October 11, 2013, 10:52:03 am »
I ask that before you cast your vote, you read the following; it is incredibly important.

Good Morning, babies! Sit down, get comfortable, because we have some things to discuss.

In the beginning of this revamp, we on Staff were still deciding what all we wanted to keep the same. We truthfully were initially wanting to keep things mostly the same, just an upgrade here and there, but the more we thought about it, the more we discussed, the more we realized the potential that we have to do something different with a site that has been around for around eight years. We have a history, a past, and after some time we realized we were still sort of living in it. It's no secret that the Freedom of Speech days of old were full of site errors and bugs we had no hope of fixing, as well as broken skins and a community that was slowly dwindling down to still boasting large numbers, but growing increasingly splintered and silent. As Staff, it was disheartening and something Felina and I wanted to change when we took over. She and I have been apart of the site for many years and now that we're co-owners, we want to make sure that the site gets the best that it can. We have a phenomenal Staff who are genuinely passionate about writing and about our Community and doing what is best for all of you. Our mindset, first and foremost, is to provide the best haven we can for writers just like us, and with that came the realization that we can't stay in the past if we're wanting to move forward. This overhaul of our image is something that needs to bring about as much change for the better as we possibly can and that brings us to what is happening over this weekend.

We are aware that we initially said that our site name and domain would be staying the same, but that is no longer the case. To put it bluntly, no matter what the outcome of the vote this weekend will be, there is no possibility of us retaining our same name and domain. Freedom of Speech was a great name, as far as names for writing sites go it was unique and it's implications were numerous--but that is no longer what we want to go by. We on Staff feel there's mixed reactions linked with our old name, memories of site errors and other past negativity we wouldn't mind distancing ourselves from, and so that is exactly what we're looking to do, and we're inviting you to take part in shaping what our future. We've come up with three distinct possible names for what our new Archive is going to be called, and we are opening the floor to you, Community, to cast your votes and decide what you'd like your new home to be called. A lot of thought and planning was put in for these three new titles, and before you cast your vote, I ask that you read on to see what each name will mean should that be the victor of our poll.

Avant-Garde Literature:
To start, avant-garde is described as, "of or pertaining to the experimental treatment of artistic, musical, or literary material.” The definition goes on to describe the term as, “unorthodox or daring” as well as, “the advance group in any field, but especially in visual, literary, or musical arts.” As a name, this will show any and all who view our site that we are not only serious in our craft but that we are always pushing the envelope and striving to be the best that we can be. Even for those of us who aren't seeking to be published authors, we should still put our best foot forward and we should do it exactly how we want. Our Community is a nice mix of authors all with different creative ambitions and ideas, and we want to convey that we accept any and all of them. Striving forward toward better things is exemplified in this minimalistic title, and the wealth of what it says about us cannot be measured. Writing is never an exact science and there are always dark corners to be explored and progressive movement is something to be encouraged. Leave those comfort zones, break out of the boxes, and if you want to show the world that you are unafraid, this is the name for you.

Literary Savant:
A Savant is described as, "a learned person", and coupled with what we authors are known for, implies that we are masters of our craft. It's a title that rolls off the tongue with a distinctive taste of sophistication and implies that we are to a force to be reckoned with, a quiet rumble that never fully quiets. What this title tells any who view our site is we take what we do seriously, we take ourselves seriously, and no one has the right to overlook us. We're here, and we're here to stay. It inspires a feeling of old world and an establishment that has been standing for years, as we have, and as authors we can't possibly overlook the visual imprint of what this title invokes. It's a name not to be forgotten, and with that imprint we leave any and all who view our Community with a sense that they've witnessed something undeniably great. With so many different authors in our ranks, this name embodies the sense of a grand library filled with books written by all those full of such brilliance and inspiration. It's a title of uniformity, of symbolism, and if you truly believe that we deserve to be remembered and honored for all that we have accomplished to bring us here, this is the name for you.

Ghosts of the Vanguard:
Of all of our possible titles, this is the one with the most mystery surrounding it. It's a name that invokes an unusual and probably different feel for every person who reads it, though I assure it's probably not at all what you're thinking. With a little explanation we can shed some light on this obscure title; much like lighting a single candle in a dark attic. Vanguard is the sister word of avant-garde, and is described as, “the leaders of any intellectual movement,” along with, “the leading position in any movement or field, or the people who occupy such position." And while most don't know this, authors are actually sometimes referred to as "ghosts"; why? Not only because of the title of "ghostwriter", but also because there's the assumption that countless newly created things were actually brought to life by an author. Like an unseen force working behind the scenes writers like us so very often are thankless for the work that we do, and that is why the title of Ghost sometimes finds it's way to an author--and it's not difficult to see why writing fanfiction or truly any unpublished medium can come across as unseen but still a very powerful force in existence. Combining these terms together, you have the title you see before you now. What does it symbolize? It symbolizes that we are the leaders of our field, taking control of an often obscure title and turning it into a symbol of pride. We may never see our work in print or flying off the shelves, but we know who we are and what we stand for. If you intend to haunt our medium and instill a strong symbol of leadership and fearlessness into a craft that is largely misunderstood and thankless and yet you intend to push forward in spite of the odds, this is the name for you.

*It should be noted that all site names will come with a tagline, a secondary line beneath the title for a brief overview of who we are and what we stand for. That will be worked on and decided upon by Staff once an actual name has been selected from the list.

These are your choices, darlings. You may select one of the three (you can only vote once), whichever name you would like for our new Archive--so I advise that you think carefully before giving up your one and only vote. The poll will close by Monday, October 14th and once it's closed, it's closed, so if you want your voice to be heard you need to cast your vote without delay! Please note that we are not accepting any other names or variations of these names, and if you don't like the names then you don't need to vote. You'll notice there is no option for "none of the above", so you can kindly keep any negative comments to yourself. This is not a time for negativity, this is not a time to be overly nostalgic about the past. We are now focusing on moving forward, and this is the path we on Staff have guided you on.

Once the poll has closed and the winning title determined, we on Staff will begin on our end, and that comes with the announcement that we are pushing the opening date back to Friday, October 18th. That is the official date, we will be up and running by then so you may freely mark your calendars and you may begin an official countdown anywhere you like starting on Monday. We on Staff appreciate your understanding of us having to push the date back, but with the renaming of the site we needed some extra time to make sure everything checks out and is running smoothly. Stay tuned come Monday for a full newsletter detailing what opening procedures are going to be.

For now, thank you for your time, your patience and understanding, and your votes!

Newsletters / [10/07/13] Halloween Contest 2013
« on: October 07, 2013, 12:52:01 pm »
All the votes have been tallied, and you guys were almost unanimous! You're wanting a Halloween contest, and you want it bad--and that makes us all on Staff very happy! Without further ado, we are here to officially announce we are having a Halloween Contest for this year, and everyone is invited to join! If you are interested in partaking, please pay close attention to the following--

Rules and Guidelines:

  • You do not need to identify that you're participating in the contest unless you'd like to! Otherwise, just submit for the contest when your entry is finished.
  • The theme of the story must feature Halloween in some way, shape, or form. This is open to interpretation but stories will be disqualified if not centered around the Holiday!
  • There are no word or page minimum or maximum; if you can write a six word horror that chills us to our bones, go for it! Or a novella. Novellas are good.
  • Ratings G-NC17 are welcome, but all appropriate warnings must be utilized where applicable.
  • All forms of writing, from fanfiction to original fiction to nonfiction to poetry/prose/songs, are welcome.
  • Submissions must be in by October 28th at 11:59 p.m. EST, and there will be no late entries. Keep those pens moving!

For those of you who have not seen the Writing Competitions Newsletter, please go here before reading on. Otherwise, the reason we are not accepting late entries is because of the prize packages, and wanting to get those mailed out in a timely manner before the next themed contest begins.

Now, for those of you wondering what a "blind judging process" means, I'll elaborate. Since the only two people who will no longer be eligible to participate in themed contests are Felina and myself (being co-owners, it's just too much), we have implemented a system that allows other Staff members to submit their stories without those judging knowing who is writing what--and that goes across the board. From now on, when submitting to a contest, you will not post the story to the Archive, but will instead email your entry in. Felina will be responsible for all intake for contests, and she will distribute the stories to the respective members of Staff who will be judging; and Felina will never be judging. This makes her the middle man, the neutral party member, and it keeps anyone who is judging from knowing who wrote what; she'll take the identities out of the equation, leaving it absolutely, 100% fair.

With this process, I no longer want to hear a single peep of complaint about bias between Staff members or favorite authors. Not. A. Word.

While Felina is active median between judges and contestants, it is your responsibility to ensure you do not include, or that you remove all identifying markers aside from the title and summary from the story itself. If this is not followed, your entry will be disqualified.

Allow me to be perfectly clear: if you submit your story via email but do not remove the credits from the story, or if you publish your story on the Archive before the judging is over, you will be disqualified.

If you truly need a reason for this, it's because it's not blind judging if you make it obvious which story is yours. Otherwise, once the judging publicly declared over, you have full permission to go ahead and submit your story and let the Community see what you have to offer! Once all stories are posted, then we'll announce the winners!

I am leaving this newsletter open for questions and/or comments, so feel free to speak up if you have anything to ask! Felina will be in touch with you guys as we get closer to the submissions date, about the email address stories are to be sent to, as well as how she would like your emails/stories formatted.

Thank you, and happy writing!

Newsletters / [10/07/13] Writing Competitions
« on: October 07, 2013, 12:51:48 pm »
Writing competitions are something that inspire and foster a creative, constructive competition between writers. It's something that helps all of us to gauge where we stand, a chance to stretch our creative muscles and test out different themes and ideas right alongside fellow writers. It puts our writing in perspective if you're wanting to be published, but helps us all gain a more literal understanding of where our writing stands and where we could use improvement. Our craft is ever-changing, always growing, and these competitions help us break out of our comfort zone and that deserves a reward, don't you think?

We on Staff certainly think so, and we have a new announcement to make in regard to the writing competitions we're going to begin hosting.

To start, we are planning on hosting regular writing competitions, contests, and Community-wide writing events. This is part of the new Archive we are looking to host, and to foster a very involved, interconnected Community full of supportive members. These standard contests will come with the standard prizes; you'll have your story featured (first place only) and you will receive a specialty button to place within your Archive profile (and Forum profile should you so desire) to display your placement in the contest (for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.) All standard writing competitions will place out to 3rd, as we on Staff believe there's always room for more voices to be heard, and oftentimes it's incredibly difficult to pick just one story to honor. These standard writing competitions will come with their own guidelines and rules that will be on display once we have our Archive and Forum back, but I want to make the distinction now; these standard competitions will be frequent and while themed, will stand apart from what new things are coming.

Because new things are coming. For those special Holidays and other theme days throughout the year we've got something really enticing planned, to coax you shy ones out of your comfort zones and to honor those who place with prizes. While all of this is still in a tentative, formulative stage, we are ready to announce that we are now going to start awarding prize packages to those who place in our themed contests.

Yes, you read that right.

If you place 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in a themed contest, you will be receiving a specialty prize package in the mail, complete with hand-selected gifts centered around writing and the theme of the contest. Depending on your placement, your prize package may include new writing tools/utensils, keepsakes, and other trinkets honoring you as a writer. All prize packages will include a letter of congratulations from the Staff, honoring your placement in our contest and commending you for a job well done. We on Staff want to praise all of our writers and encourage you to keep on in your craft, and to thank you for being apart of our Community, and since writing fanfiction (or sometimes even original fiction) is a relatively thankless job (no offense to all you wonderful reviewers out there!) we wanted to do something to change that. We wanted to reassure all of you, whether you place or not, and let you know that we on Staff are in this to foster a warm, friendly environment where you truly are free to express yourself, and we want a chance to reward you for doing so.

So those of you who were asking what we were offering for the Halloween-contest, now you know.

If you are still wondering what this means, allow me to further explain. Using our Halloween contest as a basis, here's how the process works. We are implementing a blind judging process, which is explained in the contest thread located here, and so once the deadline for story entries is reached and the judgments are in, the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place stories will be eligible for prize packages. Since this is an incredibly new process, we're unable to display just yet what all will be included for the Halloween 2013 Contest, but in the future when we announce the themed contests, we'll display pictures of what each package will contain. If you are competing in a Holiday-themed contest, please be aware that you will more than likely be receiving the same Holiday-themed packages. So for Halloween, your prizes will be centered around said Holiday. I would just like to make this expressly clear--you are absolutely able to opt out of being sent anything if you don't want the package. It is not mandatory. Otherwise, once the winning stories have been announced, we'll contact the victors privately and you'll be giving your addresses to me personally. If you are uncomfortable with that for any reason, I urge you back to my aforementioned statement of you may opt out of being sent these packages, but otherwise you are going to have to trust that I'm not going to mail you chain letters. i still might though Once I've received your addresses I'll have the packages shipped to you! It's as simple as that.

And that's really all there is to it! For now please understand this is a new process and there might be some growing pains as we on Staff adjust to things but this is absolutely something we are 100% devoted to and we hope you all are excited about the prospect! I am leaving this newsletter unlocked for questions and/or comments but please remember to stay on topic!

If you have any questions specifically in regard to the Halloween Contest, please visit it's respective newsletter and comment there.

Dottie, I love Halloween too!! I've been talking about it for about a month now! I had bought my costume from walmart but naturally it was cheap and ripping by the time I had taken it out of the bag. Needless to say I returned it :-/ BUT I'm thinking about making it!!! It's sooo much cheaper than buying the more expensive one

What are you looking to be? And god, I love Halloween so **** much. I spend all year planning for it, being excited for it. It's just such a perfect time of year, and every year the date passes, I realize one day I'll be getting married on All Hallows Eve; and to me there's nothing more special than that. We'll be here all day if I start gushing, so I'll just go on to say that since Halloween falls on a workday this year, I'll be dressing up as a witch for work--and I'm very excited about it!

Writing Tips / Re: Writer's Block : A Massive Four Letter Word

^ u_u; So much this. /comforts

Also Amber you're pretty dead on with what it feels like trying to write when there's no goddamn inspiration. That well runs dry and there's not a goddamn thing to be done about it. I've had Writer's Block for over a year before, but that's been a long while ago now and I think what I have now is just a small case of it. It's just a touch, where there's inspiration, but like the car is stuck between neutral and drive. I'm getting there, I'm still getting plot ideas and things that I want to do, but writing them is just...so slow. So like I said, I am writing drabble exercises when I can, and I set a limit for myself (no more than two pages) and I just write. Even if it's mildly forced, even if it sucks, I write. It's difficult and I hate it but it'll never get better (at least for me) if I don't do something.

Otherwise I do, wind up playing Gears of War or yes, annoying the **** out of my cat while she's trying to sleep because I'm wanting to do anything other than stare at the blank page and blinking cursor.

Writing Tips / Re: Writer's Block : A Massive Four Letter Word
« on: October 01, 2013, 01:53:24 pm »
I've heard that tip before, to be careful not to write immediately after reading someone else's work or you'll emulate their writing style and that's bad--and I can understand why reading would make you want more books. I will say though, that reading my favorite author does help me open my own eyes to my own potential, so I'm not entirely convinced it's a bad idea. When it comes to me I can only force if I'm just feeling lazy; if I seriously have no inspiration there's no amount of forcing that's gonna get anything done, and I detest forced work anyway. I've been doing drabble exercises over the last couple weeks that has been helping me get back on the horse so to speak, but it's slow-going at best.

And I wasn't looking for a fix-all; I was just curious how others deal with Writer's Block. I don't think there is a single one fix that's universal, now wouldn't that be too much to ask for. u_u; But I thought maybe sharing tips would help because maybe you do something someone else hasn't tried yet, and it winds up being useful to them in some way.

Some say this restrictive beast is a myth, and those lucky enough to never have spent any amount of time trapped underneath this monstrosity won't understand the terror it inspires just reading the title. But for those of us who do experience this, breaking out of the throes of Writer's Block can seem a very impossible task; and it seems no one person has the magic response to what exactly to do about breaking it. Some say to just write, write, write! No matter what. Others say to take a break from writing, focus on something else; others still say reading is the best cure for Writer's Block.

What I'd like to know is, how do you identify that you have Writer's Block (and aren't just feeling lazy) and what do you do to break it? Or do you just wait it out? Share tips, any will do, as you never know what help you'll provide a fellow writer!

stalking is always appropriate I'M LATE COMING BACK HERE AND SAYING WORDS AMG

Cherub I love you. That is all.

Alex dear heart I appreciate you working so hard to adjust to my name change, and I am sorry it's such a struggle for you. Fifi is right, though, the reason I am so adamant about it, is because Dot is what I identify with. Muffin was a cute nickie, and I'm not at all saying that I didn't love it, and carry that title with me for years, but it's different with the name I've got now. It truly is a symbol of who I am, my identity as a person, not just a nickname--but I won't be mad if you call me Muffin by accident, love, I know it's an adjustment and I really am grateful you're working on it.

Also? Stalk away. I am a fantastic creep all the time and Felina will tell you; don't be embarrassed and don't think we'll care! I understand because I'm the same way and Felina is used to it because I've been doing it to her 5ever. You are wonderful and we love you.

Beckums we love you too.

Love for everyone! °˖✧◝(⁰▿⁰)◜✧˖°
